Instant Messaging in the Workplace by David Royster

Communication between individuals in the workplace is a key ingredient to every business success. Other means of communication include phone call, face-to-face talk, email, and now instant messaging. Instant messaging is quicker than email, less of an interruption as a phone call, and you get facts, stats, and figures instantly.

Known for being a teenagers use to communicate, but now has grown and now commonly used in the office. Where a society today is in a rush to send and receive everything. IM is as quick as a blink of an eye. Also, an instant message gets right to the point. No need to start a conversation, you get what you want without the long interruption. A recent study found that workers who used instant messaging on the job reported less interruption than colleagues who did not, research done at Ohio State University and University of California, Irvine (http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2008/06/080603120251.htm).

Like every piece of technology known to man problems do occur. Sharing confidential information should not be done on IM because IM can be saved and hackers are never asleep, so the distribution of confidential information should be done in face-to-face conversations. Viruses and security risk problems can also occur. Opening links and attachments can lead to severe computer issues.

Instant messaging is an informal means to communicate, but it is growing at a fast rate. It is less of an interruption, which leads to an increase in productivity. With everyone needing info fast, instant messaging accompany all business needs.

  1. Great post!

IM is a great way of communicating. If I do any type of IM-ing it is using MSN Messenger.

However I use Ventrilo for communicating now a days, which is a Voice Chat software. Almost like a Phone, however, I have a Server with 50 users that connect at a time. So all and all it's a Big Conference Call!

  2. David, I think your post is great. IM is a growing means of communicating in the work place. I work for a family owned company and we use IM all the time. About a week ago, it stopped working & has been down every since. Now, in order to communicate with my co-workers on the other side of the office, I have to either call them, walk over, or yell across the room. When we had IM, it was very easy to communicate & very time saving too. We all enjoy it and miss it very much.

  3. David,
Your posting has some good substance and great points on using instant messages in the workplace. A couple of errors which I request you go back and edit; Paragraph one; fix grammar to - include phone calls; Paragraph two; fix sentence and grammar to - Where a society today is in a rush to send and receive everythng, IM is as quick as the blink of an eye; Paragraph 2; change to - No need to start a conversation, you get what you want without the long interruption; Paragraph 4; change to - accompanies.

Please, review your posting and make the above changes. Other than the small grammatical errors, you have done a fantastic job summarizing the benefits of this form of communication in the workplace. Good work!

  5. I think your post is really well-rounded. You see what you're blogging about, IMing, from all aspects and it's a great way to level with your reader. One mistake a lot of people make is speaking to intellectually above or below there reader and there's not a trace of that. Also, not many people think of using IM in the workplace so I think it's great you're getting the word out! Nicely done David :)

  6. I readed an article pertaining to IMs in the workforce. One main advantage was being able to IM someone a quick question without getting in to a long conversation. Thus, saving time and money.
